GRAND MELEE!

Schedule posted up top now! Several new additions have been included in our plans for this year including new classes, weapons, and game types. We had a blast last year and are thrilled to run this event again this year for everyone.
Some elements from last year will remain the same, and some will change. We are doing as much as we can to streamline the system and keep the same fast paced, easy to jump into mechanics from years previous and still include new diversities for new and old battlers to enjoy.
We will also be including a grouping system into the mix that will allow players to form permanent groups with their friends and allies to score points for larger groupings called "Kingdoms". The groups belonging to the kingdoms in the lead will enjoy several perks, as well as fierce competition as other kingdoms attempt to remove them from their lead.
Thats all we can say for now, full details will be made available at the event itself.
The schedule in full will be posted here soon, as well as in the Oni-Con guide. Any questions or suggestions can be posted here and I will do my best to answer them.
Thank you,
Dylan/Ethos
Awesome. Thanks for the update!
This sounds really fun.
I never actually joined this event. Going to these events are kind of hard on me mainly for money and school. But I will be here this up coming Oni at the GRBCC.
Hmm where there be some kind of station that you can create the weapons for a fee?
Anyways I was reading the last topic from last ear and I am still a bit unclear about how the game works could you elaborate some more about them?
I might as well make a sword n shield the basics.
Hey there, clockwork_rat (I love your name) and Veris_Zaos.
Allow me to make some clarifications and explanations to help potential players who have yet to attend an event understand a bit better.
Oni-Con Battlegrounds, (Previously known as Larp) is a mock combat room where players can come in at any time and participate in battles with fellow convention goers. This is done with padded weapons that we provide. There is no fee for admission or participation it is completely free to come in and play.
There are two kinds of matches, free play, and ranked. Ranked matches allow players to proceed up the class of their choice, which they choose when they sign up. A full list of available classes will be provided at the event, but largely they just regulate what weapons you have access to, and each has a special benefit at the level of mastery. Below is an example, the Soldier class.
-----------------------------------------------
-Soldier-
Level 1- "Bouncer": Dagger
Level 2- "Militia": Dagger, Sword
Level 3- "Man at Arms": Dagger, Sword, Mace
Level 4- "Guardian" Dagger, Sword, Mace, Can use shields from this rank on.
Level 5- "Knight" Dagger, Sword, Mace, Dagger/Sword
Level 6- "General" Dagger, Sword. Mace, Dagger/Sword, Mace/Sword
Level 7- "Warlord" Can sacrifice his shield (toss it away) instead of losing a hit limb and may carry a spare dagger if one is available.
------------------------------------------------
You proceed up and rank by defeating people of your own rank in a number of battles.
Free play, is much like it sounds, usually larger or special fights where anyone can use any weapon but with rare exception, no levels may be gained. These are strictly for fun. In the tournaments however, your rank level is what dictates where you start in the event.
As for match types, we've even more than we had last year, as well as the fan favorites like grand melee and Ring of Death. This year will also see events like Capture the Flag, Zombie Battle, and Siege.
Hopefully that answers some questions. If you have more, please keep them coming!
Oh, forgot to mention.
As for making/bringing your own weapons...
We have a pretty specific creation scheme we use to both keep the weapons safe, and keep them fair. So, you may bring your custom weapons if you wish but we can't promise that they will be cleared. Even some perfectly safe weapons, like the funoodle amptgard ones usualy do not get passed because of the unfair advantage they bring. (Even a greatsword made out of that stuff weighs about as much as a feather.)
Thats not to say it's a definite thing, just understand that we may not be able to approve it. We will have some pieces on hand as examples of what we use to make them, and we are more than willing to discuss creation tips.
While it was discussed that we should hold some sort of weapon creation panel, unfortunately we do not have the kind of funds it would require to have enough material for a bunch of people to build with. We are trying to keep the event completely free, and thats sort of a drawback of it. Maybe in the future though, once we have all the props and weapons we want to field an event, we can use our spare dosh to set up such a panel.
Thanks!
What day are you guys planning on starting? Also, do you guys need any sort of help?
Well, I personally will be getting there as early as I can on Friday to set up- though we likely won't start running battles until that is complete. Safe to assume however that by noon Friday, someone will be hitting someone with something- let's just hope it's our padded weaponry. =P
As soon as my brother gets back with me I'll have the schedule finalized to post here. We are still trying to decide when to have the tournament. Too early, and people will not have had a chance to level much. too late, and people will undoubtedly miss it. So we'll see.
As for aid, we will have a few extra badges on-hand and may conscript some help but it will likely be from a pool of people we already know due to security reasons. I don't know you by your SN Clockwork_Rat, but you seem like you have been to our events a time or two before. If you are interested in helping, contact me at the event and I will see if there is a place I can slot you. We usualy need help with something or another. Keep in mind though, that it will likely mean that you get less play time as a result- though any help will certainly be appreciated.
i cant wait for the battle grounds to be ready ( one of my fav parts of oni-con last year) . Even though i just played on sunday last year, imma be in on all three days, along with the gaming during my off time :D

(Edit: Functionality restored, and edited up to the top. Thank you Moonglaive.)
This will be amazing. I will love to participate in battles like this. I'd like to see how I'd fair up against in these matches. I'll be there on Saturday, so I'll be there. I don't mind using a weapon you guys give me. Since it's my first time in the Battlegrounds..would it be...a Dagger? Hmn. That's fine with me!
I'm pretty good with padded weaponry lol I can't wait... although being Kakashi will be difficult with the one eye covered and all... just don't attack me from the left! ^_^!
